The relevant code hasn't been changed for ages, so I really doubt that
it is a problem specific to 3.4.2-5.

What does
dpkg -S /usr/sbin/update-icon-caches
give you.
Which version of libgtk2.0-0 do you have installed?
What's the output of
md5sum /usr/sbin/update-icon-caches*
