Do you have the same problem when you select "GNOME Classic" at the GDM
prompt?

What is your graphics card and your video driver?

Having experienced the same symptoms on some old NVIDIA GeForce card,
with both nouveau and proprietary drivers, I am pretty sure this is not
a GNOME bug, but rather an X driver bug.
