Just to provide some additional background information.
The reason why those authentication popups are triggered is Bug #606092 [1]
As a result of this bug report, the packagekit policy was changed to
require admin priviliges to do system updates.
gnome-settings-daemon though expects that such updates can be done
silently/unattended, i.e. without user interaction. See also the comment
in [2]
So, what Joss has done is disable the auto-updates in gnome-settings-daemon.
