Package: gnome-icon-theme
Version: 3.7.91-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

gnome-icon-theme is the default icon theme for Gnome on Debian: this is
logical as is also the default icon theme shipped with gnome. But i've
found out that you cannot remove this package and replace it with
another, unless you make a mutually excluding package that Provides,
Conflicts, Replaces it. This is particularly hostile to Debian Derivatives.

As every single icon-dependent gnome application depends on
gnome-icon-theme, it should be a virtual package provided by all
gnome-icon-theme(s) in the repository, so that users can replace it
freely whenever they want, and Derivatives can get rid of it (cleanly)
if they use another icon theme.

Of course, the name of the real binary package contenting the icons
should change and gnome-core should change the dependency to something
like " gnome-icon-(new-name) | gnome-icon-theme".

I hope you can consider and think about this. I'll be around if you need
any help.

Greetings,
