This is a red herring. As can be in the filename, I had cairo on hold to
work around bugs in other software. With a recent cairo things just
work. Maybe libgtk-3-0 could declare a Breaks against libcairo2 (<=
1.12.0-1)? On the other hand with would only ever become relevant when
upgrading from squeeze to jessie, which is unsupported.
That leaves me with basically not being able to reproduce the grave
parts of the issue at all. Should this bug be downgraded?
