It didn't help.  This is not the same problem as my other computer that did not show the greeter.  The greeter allows me to try to log in to gnome but gnome never starts.
I am attaching the syslog in case that helps.  The syslog should show that I tried to log in to gnome and then logged in to gnome-flashback.

Also, gnome-flashback seems sluggish.  I looked at htop to see what was going on.  In htop, I see a lot of multiple pids for what looks like the same thing.  They could be threads, I don't know.
I am attaching a screen shot of htop to show what I mean.
