I also had the problem of loging in via gdm3 and getting a blank screen
(with the exception of the debian logo at the bottom). I started having
this problem after upgrading a jessie machine on Friday, November 22 in
the morning (America/New_York). In the evening of the same day I fixed
the problem with:
apt-get remove gnome-core gnome-shell gdm3 gnome-session
apt-get install gnome-core gnome-shell gdm3 gnome-session
Then reboot.
(As suggested in comments 71 and 203.)
