I think the logind related error messages are a red herring. Most of the
Debian GNOME maintainers are using systemd nowadays successfully (typing
that from a systemd powered machine)
That said, if you use systemd, also make sure to have libpam-systemd
installed.

Aside from that: can you reproduce the problem on and up-to-date sid
system? Did you get the hangs with gnome-shell 3.4 as well?

Does gnome-shell dead lock completely or does gnome-shell just block for
a while?
