Hi, Michael.

Nice to know that, as I (sincerely) am not ready to change my current workflow.

OTOH, my X-related fu is next to zero and I would need to learn a
trick or two before actually maintaining stuff. That being said, I do
have some other packages ready for potential sponsoring that I would
like to see in Debian, like the Faenza icon theme (and some other
things).

That, BTW, seems to be packaged by other downstream distributions
(like being the default icon set of Linux Mint).

If you would like to see it, please let me know. :)

Let me split the answer in two parts:

1. Yes, I proposed demoted it to a recommends because I disable
pulling in recommends. :)

2. Apparently, gnome-session-flashback is not a pure meta-package
(pure in the sense of just pulling in the dependencies), as it
contains other things which, to a newbie like me, may be needed by
display managers and other stuff:

$ dpkg -L gnome-session-flashback | grep -v doc
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/gnome-session
/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions
/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-flashback.session
/usr/share/applications
/usr/share/applications/gnome-wm.desktop
/usr/share/xsessions
/usr/share/xsessions/gnome-fallback.desktop
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/gnome-wm
/usr/bin/gnome-session-flashback
$

If I saw that it were a pure metapackage, I would just pick the
components that I wanted, but as I see other things which are used by
display managers...

Thanks for your speedy response,

Rogério.
