I've seen similar issues when testing dist-upgrades from wheezy to sid.

The change in gdm3 (3.8.4-3) fixed this for me:

  * Use a versioned Depends on gnome-shell (>= 3.6) rather then an unversioned
    Depends + a versioned Breaks. There is no real reason to do the latter and
    it seems to confuse APT and break upgrades.


Would be great if you can test if 3.8.4-3 work better for you.
