Applied updates to successful jessie installation on 2014/04/03

Restarted gdm3; rebooted (power cycled); reinstalled gdm3 and gnome-
shell.
* What was the outcome of this action?
No change. X display remains black and unusable.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
Hoped for return to normal operation.
Other system operation appears normal.
