Bug#758148: remote X applications not refreshing screen properly until forced

I am running an up to date jessie desktop using gnome-shell.  I have recently
noticed when I ssh to a remote server and start an xterm or emacs from the
remote server, the xterm or emacs windows fail to refresh properly until I
force a refresh on the window.  For example if I do an ls in the xterm, I will
see only part of the response until I force the window to refresh by moving my
cursor out of the window and then back into the window.  When the cursor comes
back into the window the screen will refresh.  The same will happen when
editing files in emacs.  Moving the cursor out of the window into the desktop
and back is not good enough to force the refresh.  I have to move the cursor
onto another open window and then back into the window I want to refresh.  I
have focus mode set to Mouse.

The problem appears to only happen with applications started on another
computer and tunneled back to my desktop through ssh.
