In src/netspeed.c, panel_applet_gconf_get_*() functions are used in many
places. However, these functions are deprecated and are removed in the
latest stable release of gnome-panel (currently in NEW queue).
You should either port to GSettings [1] (and use functions like
panel_applet_get_settings, this is the recommended way) or store the
settings in a single gconf location (not per-instance).
