Strange, I can see (using plymouth exited with <Esc>) lines like:
Starting Initialize hardware monitoring sensors...
or
Starting LSB: network connection manager...

For me the screen goes black (but still is on) for a moment just before 
GDM comes up. Does it really turn off for you?
