It would probably also be a good idea to ask the maintainers of non-core
GNOME sessions in Debian (according to apt-file that means cairo-dock-core,
openbox-gnome-session and xmonad) to either add gnome-screensaver
to their sessions, or make a deliberate decision not to do so.
