I confirm this, and it still affects version 3.12.1-1 in sid.

When password authentication is enabled on the server, I could see two
different behaviors :

- Version 3.4.3+dfsg-1 (wheezy) just hangs, as decribed by op
- Version 3.12.1-1 (sid) immediately segfaults

Disabling password authentication on the server allows both versions to
connect successfully.
