Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:3.8.3-7
Severity: normal
Component
Hardware/Power-Applet of Gnome-Control-Center (Version: 1:3.8.3-7)
OS
Debian GNU/Linux jessie/sid; Kernel version Debian 3.14.4-1 (2014-05-13)
Description
Overview
After booting the notebook display is set to full brightness as corresponding
to the value of 12421 savedin the files
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness, /.../max_brightness, and
/.../actual_brightness . Opening the power applet of gnome-control-center and
moving the brightness slider to and fro has no effect, nor does tapping on the
Fn-↑- or Fn-↓-combination.
Setting display brightness works by moving a lower value to
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness, e. g. executing 'echo 2400 >
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness' on the console as root.
Looking at the brightness-slider again, its position is not far from the left
edge, just representing 2400 within a range from 0 to 12421. The values in
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness and
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness have now changed to
2400.
Steps to Reproduce
(1) Boot the OS and log in.
(2) Open gnome-control-center, start the power applet and move the brightness
slider to and fro, or
(3) Press the Fn key down and tap on the ↑ or the ↓ key. A window with a
symbolised sun and a progress bar which reacts correctly to your key presses.
But nothing else happens.
Actual results
The display brightness cannot be changed with the brightness slider nor by
pressing Fn-↑- or Fn-↓. You have to use a work-around as mentioned above.
