I'm happy to tell you that VTE master (to be 0.38) has entirely
dropped its ncurses dependency :)

We abandoned the idea that "VTE does whatever is written in the
terminfo file".  It was a cool sounding idea, but just didn't work in
practice.  We're back to what every other terminal emulator does: "VTE
tries to do what xterm does, which is by the way more or less
described by the 'xterm' terminfo entry."
