Can you reproduce this with another desktop environment?
(Preferably one that also uses OpenGL.)

Looks like a kernel or X bug, rather than a GNOME one => same question
as above.

It would be good to have the output of `sudo journalctl' for these two
failing modes.

That may be a different bug.
