Actually, spoke too soon; a build under sudo does eventually fail
for me. I'm re-running the build as an ordinary user and under sudo
just to be sure, but it seems plausible that this is why it's failing.

Anyone know whether FTBFS-when-building-as-root is considered to be RC?
I'm pessimistically assuming yes for now, but it's possible that
that's not something we intend to support.
