I used to be a happy gnome 2 user but when it was EOLed I switched to
Xfce [1]. It gets the work done (and I really like it) but it is not as
polished as gnome 2 was. I didn't use KDE for years so I can't help here
but If you liked gnome 2 you can try MATE [2] (rebranded and updated
gnome 2; available in stable as backport) or cinammon [3] (gnome 3 with
a more gnome 2 like GUI; just entered testing).
