Dear Emilio,
Thanks, that did it.

For the record with the corrupted database, I was still able to set my
keyboard layout with setxkbmap:
$ setxkbmap fr mac apple "lv3:ralt_switch,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
but I had to do it each time I logged it in GNOME.
