So, my guess was correct. Reverting commit

cf51c4f6dbd91dae1878a0cb0d08b24c67e15232:
"textbuffer: nicer get_iter functions"

fixes the issue.
So I'd say, this should be filed upstream against gtk+. Such a
breakage/regression should not happen for a stable release update.
