You're welcome to try, but frankly, I seriously doubt that upstream
could be convinced to include even those two lines of code (let alone a
test for each known xterm-compatible terminal or wrapper, for distros
not using an alternative system) just to accommodate the (many) users of
non-GNOME desktops which rely on Glib to launch applications in a terminal.

None, aside of a less-than-a-microsecond delay due to the added test.

Because it would allow to close bug reports in various BTS (see provided
links) in addition to this one, which would provide a great service to a
lot of Debian (and derivatives) users; isn't that what the Debian Social
Contract's clause #4 is all about ?
