To add a data point, I switched the NVIDIA driver in my system back to 
the version in stable. I have been using it for 3 weeks and I haven't 
seen a regression with patched version of mutter. The original problem 
is almost fixed. I *very rarely* experience some delays when switching 
tabs in gnome-terminal, but it is still a vast improvement over the 
non-patched version.

Beside that, jessie-backports has a newer version of nvidia-driver so it 
is still possible to use it if one needs.
