I already have an Xorg configuration file, does it still get autogenerated
then? If so, how does it relate to the one I already have?

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf
Section "Device"
        Identifier "GeForce GT 430"
        Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Granted, it's a very simple one with the sole purpose of loading the nvidia
(proprietary) driver, but it could've been an extensive one. Also this conf
file was present when the problem manifested itself.
