Bug#830703: gnome-software exits with "Timeout was reached"

gnome-software 3.20.2-2 cannot be launched from the desktop.  From the
console, gnome-software exits with a "Timeout was reached" message,
after a delay of a few seconds (~30s).

(Evidently gnome-software is trying to connect to some kind of network
service, but running with `--verbose` option does not offer any hints
as on what exactly is the service it is trying to reach.)
