Since upgrading to jessie (with GNOME 3), I've been having a lot of
trouble with projectors, it is more troublesome than with wheezy.

The laptop is a Lenovo X220t, it has a VGA and DisplayPort output

One of the problems encountered is that after removing the projector,
all the contents of virtual workspaces get moved into the first
workspace and a blank area appears in the virtual workspace switcher
(see screenshot).  The blank area wasn't there before attaching the
projector and it goes away after logging out and logging in again.
