Gnome upgrade failure blocking dist upgrade from jessie to stretch

setting all repositories pointing to stretch and

apt-get update

apt-get -s dist-upgrade

produces::

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

gnome-packagekit : Breaks: gnome-packagekit-session (< 3.16.0) but 
3.14.0-1 is to be installed

I understand that gnome-packagekit-session becomes a transitional 
package pointing to
gnome-software. I do not know anything about package management but is 
there a bug in that rather than
in a package here?
