As you already noticed this has already been fixed upstream
and in (post-jessie) Debian. If you think this issue is severe
enough that you'd like to work on backporting the fix to the
stable package then you'll need to prepare an updated stable
package, debdiff it against the current package and contact the
(Stable) Release Managers for review/approval.

Please beware that there are other crash-fixes upstream which you
might want to consider looking at as well.

If/when you have approval from SRM to upload to stable then get
back in contact and we'll help you with sponsoring your upload
if needed.
