here's the list of packages, i had to downgrade from testing, in order
to have caja working :
gir1.2-gtk-3.0
gtk-update-icon-cache
libgail-3-0
libgtk-3-0
libgtk-3-bin
libgtk-3-common


debian sid amd64.

it might help others who search Debian MATE bug reports and find no
solutions/info/workarounds to get their machines functional again.

thanks to the original poster for giving directions on working around it.
