I have done apt+dpkg first upgrade tests in piuparts for jessie, (mainly
to see if the new apt solves some failing upgrade paths better).
But I haven't looked into doing such for stretch, yet. And so far it
didn't look like its needed.

Looking at you log, it already fails to install apt+dpkg from stretch.
This involves upgrading all the C++ libs due to the v5 transition.
And with gnome installed, these are probably a lot ...
