I can confirm the same behavior on a currect stretch installation. Autologin will not log into a wayland session, while regular login does. As a workaround I use "Timed Login" with a timeout of 1 second now which also logs successfully into my default wayland session (the user session starts on VT2 but that is a different story/bug).
