Upgraded a system to stretch today

It had been running jessie with a default GNOME 3 setup

Now I notice that the workspace background is just white.  When I move
the mouse over the "Activities" widget, the background image appears.

It is also white in the workspace switcher background (screenshot attached)

I've seen a similar issue discussed in Arch Linux:
