So, we are in a odd situation here. For some background see [1].

Without this patch, nautilus-desktop is started by default for the GNOME
Classic session and draws the icons on the desktop. The downside is,
that the user can no longer override this setting via
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false.

With the patch applied, you can enable/disable show-desktop-icons either
via gnome-tweak-tool or
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true
but this is something which needs to be run manually by every user (you
need to run it only once though)
This also affects both the Classic and the regular GNOME Shell session.

The default is, to have show-desktop-icons false, which is unexpected
for GNOME Classic users, and I agree with upstream's reasoning here that
users of GNOME Classic expect icons on the desktop by default.

So I'm leaning towards dropping the patch, even if that means that users
can no longer disable desktop icons when in Classic mode.

A real fix would have separate Gsettings keys for normal and classic
mode, but this idea was rejected upstream.

I'll keep this bug report open for further feedback. Maybe users of the
Classic mode can comment here. I think tails uses it by default, so
CCing Raphael.
