Aside from the usual shell script debugging techniques (set -x, etc),
you could try to increase the debug level of gdm via its daemon.conf.
Don't have better suggestions unfortunately.
Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the
universe are pointed away from Earth?
