Bug#869168: gnome-shell: White background instead of wallpaper

Dear Debian folks,


After upgrading from Debian 8 (Jessie) to Debian 9 (Stretch), logging
into the GNOME session of one user, there is a white background, as can
be seen in the attached screenshots. Activating the overlay menu shows
a different background though.
