I'm running a Gonme-on-Wayland session.
Trying to cut+paste from a X11 (i.e. non-wayland) app (tried xterm and firefox)
into a Wayland app (tried gnote and gedit) is incredibly slow (≥ 10 seconds),
it it works at all.
This similar to bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782694

Applying 19f08fbdbba113883c6011e4b8ccf3ea3a6eb57e from mutter in Gnome git
(branch gnome-3.22) fixes this for me.
