Respectfully, the build does work just fine.

I spent a fair amount of time today testing the build in different
configurations with the appstream test. If you have appstream-util
installed, you either need to have network access or build using
--without-appdata-test (I applied that change in the Debian packaging
repository today).

Your specific error was because you had an old version of
appstream-util installed (as mentioned on the upstream bug).
