Sorry, we are unlikely to be able to solve a bug with only this amount
of information.

Are you using any GNOME Shell extensions? You can check this with:

dconf read /org/gnome/shell/enabled-extensions
dconf read /org/gnome/shell/disable-user-extensions

What does this mean, specifically? If you go through these steps:

* power off computer
* power on computer
* wait for graphical login prompt to appear
* select user
* type password
* wait for desktop environment to start
* run an application like gnome-terminal

what is the point at which the system's behaviour stops being what you
would expect?

What other messages do you get in the syslog when you try to log in?
Please start from the point where gdm3 startup begins (or earlier),
and copy messages until after you have tried to log in. You can censor
messages that contain private information, but please make it obvious
what you have censored (for instance replace it with XXX).

What hardware is this on? Specifically, which video hardware?
(lspci | grep VGA might be useful)

If you create a new user account on the same computer, and log in to GNOME
as the new user, does that work? (If it does, then that would indicate
that the problem is caused by something in your personal configuration,
which gets us closer to finding a solution.)
