I think I have a patch that works for (a) without modifying gdk-pixbuf:
we already install gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders in
/usr/lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)/gdk-pixbuf-2.0, so I just need to set
GDK_PIXBUF_QUERYLOADERS. Testing now.
