I can confirm the existence of this problem and that it renders baobab
almost unusable (there are, however, workarounds).

Normally, when the mouse cursor hoovers over a sector of the ring chart
of baobab, that sector becomes highlighted and black labels with the
names of the sub-directories appear.

However, at least in some desktop configurations (e.g. mine or
Eduard's), that highlighting disappears after a short while and the
labels never show up.

Here are two workarounds to prevent the highlighting from disappearing
and thus to show the labels:

(1) Keep moving the mouse pointer within a sector of a ring chart such
    that sector remains highlighted.

(2) Immediately after the sector becomes highlighted, stop moving the
    mouse and press the "escape" key.

This problem does not seem to be known upstream, but it has been
reported for the MATE version of disk usage analyzer:
