FWIW -- I went back to Xorg from wayland (just logged out and chose
Gnome Xorg instead of Gnome) and sluggishness and repetitive
keystrokes are gone, these error messages still piling up in the logs
though.  They seems to have no drastic effect (besides filling up the
drive). At least I can use the laptop again
