How was it invoked? (Please strace the parent process if necessary.)

I can run, for example

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/glib-2.0/gio-launch-desktop gnome-calculator

and it works. However,

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/glib-2.0/gio-launch-desktop nonexistent

exits 255 with no diagnostics (and looking at the source code, any other
failure mode will also exit 255 with no diagnostics).
