If you upgrade GTK+ to version 3.24.1 or later, does that solve this bug?
Version 3.24.1-1 is available in Debian experimental, and I've just
uploaded 3.24.1-2 to unstable (it should be available soon).

This version temporarily reverted
<https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/merge_requests/302>,
which we had to do to solve a regression,
<https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/issues/1316>. 3.24.1
has a fixed version of that commit, from
<https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/merge_requests/329>.
