The --replace feature cannot work when GNOME Shell is run as a Wayland
compositor. It can only work in the older architecture where GNOME Shell
runs as an X11 window manager, with a separate X11 server (Xorg) that does
not restart.

The same is true for restarting GNOME Shell by typing "r" in the dialog
box produced by Alt+F2.

If you rely on features that only work in X11 mode, you can select
"GNOME on Xorg" from the list of available sessions in gdm (it's a
gear/cogwheel icon below the password box).
