update: I was playing with display settings a found that the wrong
graphics controller has been set for some time. I was incorrectly using
`VBoxVBA` which exhibits the problem after the Gnome 3.34 update.
Switching to the correct setting of `VMSVGA` resolves the problem.

Since `VBoxVBA` according to the help documentation appears to be for
Windows systems, this can just be closed.
