Please send the system log (systemd journal) from the first appearance
of gdm to the error.

The same. (It's probably the same issue: the gdm greeter *is* the GNOME
desktop in a different mode.)

Probably. *After* you have collected those logs, please try upgrading
to gnome-shell 3.36.x from unstable (which will also require upgrading
to the unstable version of libmutter and other closely related packages).
We'll probably find that we need to add some versioned Breaks to make
sure everything gets upgraded as a single batch, but it's difficult to
do that during the initial transition, since that would require us to
know what order everything was going to be rebuilt in.
