This seems to be the root cause of the gnome-shell issue. Fixing
accountsservice gives me a nice "Switch User..." option just below "Log
Out", and an icon in the lower right corner of the lock screen with the
same effect.

This is a small part of gnome-shell's functionality, but a large part
of what accountsservice is meant to do, so I'm considering this to be
release-critical for accountsservice.
