> Do you have an old version of libglib-2.0.so.0 in /lib/i386-linux-gnu?

Yes. And I feel like I have wasted your time now, as this was the problem. I did notice in one of the other bug reports that the submitter also had this, but I must have misread It not to realize it was their problem. Although I had noticed the duplication too, I had assumed that being in different locations meant there was a reason for the two versions. Much like Perl and Python seem to have a habit of multiplying!

Just for reference I will reply to your questions in case anything in them helps reveal why this problem is happening.

It is ordinary Debian stable originally installed from an image, I think that was squeeze, and updated through apt-get. The one slightly odd thing about my setup is that my root is on a small USB stick, but several directories under /var are bind mounted to a hard disk to reduce writes but also for space. Those are cache, lib, log, mail, spool, and swap. /tmp is using tmpfs.

The server is mainly a file server, via NFS to a Mac and DLNA to my TV. It had not been giving any hardware of software errors, and there was no pressing need to upgrade now. It was only with being stuck at home that I thought it was the right time so I can keep everything at the latest versions.

I have made the listings hardware independent for completeness.

That worked! Thank you. And yes, the other files did exist.

I cannot remember now, but it is quite possible I had added an unstable repository to install a specific package.

My oldest history.log file under /var/log/apt has the timestamp of Nov 29, 2015, and the below log entries are the start of the file as it attempts to upgrade the library from 2.33.12+really2.32.4-5 to 2.42.1-1.

The other entires in that log are for "apt-get upgrade” and “apt-get install ffmpeg” executed immediately after without error. I have no memory of what I must have done between 9:20 and 9:28 to fix the dpkg error. The only references to libglib2.0-0 in more recent log files are as part of an "apt-get upgrade” command which complete without error. Those, incidentally, are upgrading in the steps (2.42.1-1+deb8u3, 2.50.3-2+deb9u2) and (2.50.3-2+deb9u2, 2.58.3-2+deb10u2).
